Welcome to our Homelands

The rich lands and waters of our Homelands have nourished our people since the beginning of time. In the way that we respect these lands and waters, we ask that you also do the same during your visit. While the land may look uninhabited, our practice of fishing and gathering means we follow the bounty of the seasons. You will come across habitations and gear in the Territory and see the places where our ancestor's villages stood. Please do not disturb any items you may "find" for they are not lost or abandoned, they are just waiting for our return.

Please, whatever you bring to our Territory, please take it out. We have to transport all refuse back to Port Hardy for proper disposal and recycling. Areas marked on charts and maps as Indian Reserves are reserved for our exclusive use and no trespass is allowed without our permission. Other areas did not  become designated as Indian Reserves, however the historical and archaeological values are nonetheless protected by the Provincial Heritage Conservation Act and regulations. Digging, disturbing, removing and/or possession of artifacts is unlawful and subject to prosecution.  It is also disrespectful to our ancestors whose spirits remain in those places.

The entirety of  Hope Island is federal Indian Reserve. This is our home. As we would not walk through your property, we ask the same consideration to treat Hope Island as you would any private property.  Please observe the signage.

At this time there are no services, or public facilities available on Hope Island. Visitors are asked not to go ashore. We are working on a management plan with plans to build infrastructure to welcome visitors to Hope Island.  We ask that you respect our concerns, and are successful in making alternate plans for your journey. Safe travels.

Note.  the entirety of  Hope Island is Indian Reserve Lands.
Notice: Be aware there are wolves roaming on Hope Island.
